Remember when some people used to say that Johnny Gill was the only member of New Edition that could “really” sing? Regardless of what the disparity may have been between their vocal capabilities, New Edition with Johnny Gill still managed to work, reference the classic “Can You Stand The Rain”.
Fast forward, here we are in 2011 and Johnny Gill has been virtually absent from our music radar for about 16 years and this summer he is scheduled to release his first full length LP titled – In The Mood .
The CD is being release on St. Louis-based Notifi Records, which also includes R&B heartthrob – Genuwine in its stable of artists.
Earlier this week he released, the debut and title track from the new album –“ In the Mood”. If this track is any indication of what to expect from the upcoming album, then R&B fans are in for a real treat.
The new album will also feature the contributions from Wylcef and Bryan Michael Cox.
“In The Mood”, as the name might suggest, is a slow jam which highlights Gill’s range vocally as he bounces successfully between falsetto tones and that “come here girl” voice that we remember him for and has that always made his sound distinctive.
The track is well balanced and a real pleasure to listen to if slow jams are your thing. Johnny’s vocals are accompanied by background vocals from an as yet unnamed vocalist and the contrast between the two works very well as the backgrounds delicately provide the song’s hook which fits in nicely within the context of the track.
Welcome back Mr. Gill, the new single will get past and new fans, as the title suggests – In The Mood. We are looking forward to the album.
